Assumption gets new headmaster

18 June 2014

A CROSSGAR man has been appointed principal of Assumption Grammar School, in Ballynahinch.

Peter Dobbin will take over the headmaster’s post from Paul McBride at the end of the summer to begin what he describes as a “dream job.”

Mr. Dobbin, who is originally from Downpatrick and a former pupil of St. Patrick’s Grammar School, was delighted to receive confirmation of his appointment on Friday.

The move will signal an end of a 19-year tenure at Aquinas Diocesan Grammar School in Belfast, which he joined as young graduate of French and Spanish in 1995 before being promoted to the post of vice-principal in 2010.

He has excelled in his chosen career, winning a national teaching award in ICT in 2006 before leading Aquinas in a successful bid to become UK Spanish School of the Year in 2008.

He is also an active affiliate of Teaching and Learning NI, which promotes excellence in teaching, and has developed Aquinas Grammar School into a Confucius Classroom Hub for the implementation of Mandarin language and culture in schools across Northern Ireland.

“It is a great privilege to be appointed principal of Assumption Grammar, which is one of the leading grammar schools in Northern Ireland,” he said.

“It is a dream come true.”
