Ardglass golfer eyeing Irish Amateur crown

6 May 2015

ARDGLASS golfer Cormac Sharvin will go into this week’s Irish Amateur Championship on a high.

Sharvin finished fourth at the prestigious Lytham Trophy over the weekend and just days before that he retained the coveted British Universities title at the Duke’s Course, St Andrews.

The Walker Cup hopeful, one of five Irishmen on the initial 20-man squad for this September’s matches, took fourth spot at Royal Lytham & St Annes on the Lancashire coast behind runaway winner Marcus Kinholt of Sweden.

Like the rest of the cream of Irish amateur golf, Sharvin turns his attention to the Irish Amateur which gets underway at Royal Dublin tomorrow.

Sharvin finished joint runner-up a year ago and will be aiming to get the better of Scotland’s Jamie Savage this time around.

Judging by his form at St Andrews last week, he has every chance of winning.

Sharvin was part of the Stirling University line-up which won the team  championship and he also captured the singles title with a commendable four-round total of 292.

He said afterwards: “It was a great honour to win this title last year. I can hardly believe that I have won it again this year, and on such a challenging course.”
