Archbishop to visit area

THE Archbishop of Canterbury is taking part in a number of events in Downpatrick on St. Patrick’s Day.

Justin Welby will be joining the Church of Ireland Diocese of Down and Dromore for its annual March 17 celebrations in Down Cathedral at the invitation of the Bishop of Down and Dromore, the Rt. Revd. Harold Miller.

Archbishop Welby will celebrate Holy Communion at Saul Church then join the traditional pilgrimage walk to Downpatrick before attending and preaching at the cross-community festival service in the Cathedral on the theme of ‘reconciliation.’ Following the service, the Archbishop will lay a wreath at St. Patrick’s grave adjacent to the cathedral.

After lunch in the marquee, the Archbishop will briefly join in the St Patrick’s Day parade as it makes its way from the Ardglass Road to the Lower Market Street car park.
