A Killyleagh family firm spanning four generations comes to an end

IT’S the end of an era as Killyleagh says goodbye to one of its oldest and most respected businesses.

TM Martin and Son will close its doors for the final time this Saturday after 117 years.

Established in 1907 by Thomas Marshall Martin, the car dealer business in Cross Street was originally a cycle manufacturer and outlet.

After a short illness, Thomas Martin died aged 31, leaving a young widow, Mrs Jane Martin, and one year-old son, Hugh.

Mrs Martin ran the business herself until her son was enough to help her. When Hugh was 23, he undertook the task of designing and building a motor vehicle workshop which was completed in 1935.

Hugh also built a car showroom in 1959 and was joined in the business by his son, John.

Hugh’s grandson, Richard, has been in charge of the managerial duties since John – his father – took a step back after having worked for 60 years.

“The announcement of our closure has brought a mixture of emotions,” Richard said.

“We are all sad to see it go. “It’s bittersweet. The business has been in my family for four generations so it’s very hard to let go of something that is so dear to us, but with closure comes a new beginning.”

Richard has written to many of TM Martin’s customers, thanking them for their loyal support over the years.

“The business is a real landmark in Killyleagh,” he continued. “I just want to thank everyone who trusted us to provide them with our services and I hope that’s how TM Martin and Son is remembered.

“I also hope people remember us a business that did a good job and always wanted to meet the expectations of our customers.”

Richard paid tribute to his staff, some of whom had been with the firm for 50 years.

“If I thanked everyone we’d be here all day and I’d end up forgetting someone,” Richard added.

“The staff have been absolutely tremendous and I cannot thank them enough for all their hard work and loyalty down the years.”
