30mph zones to be introduced in Ballyhornan

5 October 2016

A MAJOR campaign to secure a new 30mph speed limit in Ballyhornan has been successful.

Stormont Infrastructure Minister Chris Hazzard confirmed yesterday afternoon that the new speed restriction will come into force within the next few weeks, once roads officials have put in place the necessary road markings and signs.

The introduction of the new 30mph limit is one of four new speed restrictions being introduced at this part of the district to make the area safer for drivers and pedestrians.

Two new 30mph zones will be introduced along two sections of the Killard Road in Ballyhornan and at the Rocks Road near Kilclief. A new 30mph zone is also being introduced at the Bishopscourt Road.

The new 30mph zones at the Killard Road include a section between the Ardglass Road and Rocks Road and the Rocks Road and Benderg Park. The entire length of the Rocks Road will become a 30mph zone, while the 30mph zone at the Bishopscourt Road includes a section from the Ardglass Road to the Glebe Road.

Residents in Ballyhornan have been campaigning for a 30mph zone to be introduced for many years. In June 2014, farmer Paddy Wilkinson was killed outside his farm at the Killard Road after being knocked down by a car, sparking calls for improved road safety measures in the area.

Mr Hazzard, who has also campaigned for the 30mph zone in Ballyhornan, described the new speed restrictions as a “welcome development” to help improve road safety in Ballyhornan and Kilclief.

The Minister said Kilclief has seen a small rise in population lately which inevitably leads to larger volumes of traffic.

“Now that I have put these speed restrictions in place, I am confident they will help alleviate the concerns of local residents which I know have been voiced for some time,” added Mr Hazzard.

Residents in Ballyhornan were informed in 2010 that the village qualified for a 30mph limit, but it has taken until now for final confirmation that one will be introduced.

Councillor Gareth Sharvin is delighted the new speed restrictions are to be introduced and praised residents for their “successful campaign” to improve road safety at this part of the district.

He added: “The new 30mph zones include all main residential areas for the Ballyhornan, Tullyronan and Bishopscourt area and will provide safety to road users and residents.”
