United Nations award presented to schoolgirls

TWO students from St. Mary’s High School have been presented with a United Nations Global Citizen Award.

Aimee Straney and Leontia Maginn were presented with the award by Sr. Vianney  on behalf of Sr. Deirdre Mullan, director of the Mercy Global Concern at the United Nations, New York.

The students were recognised for voluntary work they have undertaken in the community and the way in which they have worked to improve the quality of life for others.

Both students are also active in their school community, fundraising for charities, raising awareness of global poverty and carrying on the Mercy tradition of the order’s founder Sister Catherine McAuley.

The Sisters of Mercy are currently working worldwide in 43 countries.

Sr. Vianney said she was delighted to present the award, which has never before been given to a school.

School principal, Mrs. Sheila Darling said the school was very honoured to have been presented with this award.

“At St. Mary’s we encourage every student to make their contribution to their local community and to society and it is very fitting that two of our students have been recognised in this way,” she said.
