Seven girls rescued from Mournes

Seven teenage girls have been rescued from the Mournes after getting into difficulty earlier today.

The Mourne Mountain Rescue Team led the members of a Girls Brigade group from the mountains after a 999 call alerted the emergency services to the problem.

Two of the girls were suffering from hypothermia and one was taken to Daisy Hill Hospital for treatment.

The mountain rescue team was called out at 3.30pm after the emergency call was made from a mobile phone registered to one of the girls.

The call had been disconnected before the operator could speak to the caller and numerous attempts by police to re-establish a connection with the phone failed.

The Mourne team members found the girls at the Blue Lough, near Slieve Binnian, just after 5.30pm. Because of the condition of two of the girls the Irish Coastguard helicopter was launched but it

 

Paramedics were able to provide medical assistance before one was taken to hospital and the rest were reunited with their parents.
