SAINTFIELD sailor Hammy Baker has won a place in the starting line-up of one of the world’s most prestigious solo offshore races.

The 25 year-old, who is taking part in his rookie season on the racing circuit, has qualified for the gruelling 2,000-mile Solitaire du Figaro race at the end of May.

The 46th edition of the Solitaire du Figaro will take competitors to five European host venues. Starting in Bordeaux, France on May 31, the race will visit Sanxenxo, Spain, La Cornouaille, France, Torbay, UK, and Dieppe, France, over the course of one month.

Baker (25) said: “For me the Solitaire du Figaro is the ultimate test of mind, body and tactical skill. I’ve put so much energy and passion into sailing over the years and to compete in the Solitaire really is the epitome of what I’ve been working towards.

“I will feel very proud to represent the Northern Ireland in the race.”
