Publish traffic survey says Ritchie

Publish traffic survey says Ritchie

29 October 2014

A SURVEY on Downpatrick’s town centre traffic must be published, according to South Down MP, Margaret Ritchie.

Miss Ritchie said the need for a resolution to the town’s traffic problems was becoming more urgent and warned that continued congestion would hinder economic development.

With a recent study suggesting a £6 return for every pound invested in heritage tourism, Miss Ritchie said the local economy would be significantly strengthened if the Roads Service found a permanent solution to traffic issues.

She said she believed a western by-pass and a park and ride service at the Belfast Road roundabout was the best option.

“For too long, Roads Service has shied away from finding permanent solutions asserting environmental and cost considerations, whilst the traffic problems have intensified,” said Miss Ritchie.

“The Minister for Regional Development initiated a Downpatrick Traffic Study, a considerable time ago and it is still not yet completed.

“That delay is simply adding to the frustration of businesses, those who work and attend schools and the local Downe Hospital, and motorists who have to endure difficulties entering, going round and getting out of the town.

“Apparently, surveys are currently underway to provide the most up to date information on where traffic is coming from and going to within the town.

“I now urge the Minister for Regional Development to ensure that no further time is squandered and that he and Roads Service come forward with comprehensive proposals to ease traffic congestion and provide an important stimulus to economic growth and social and health development in Downpatrick town centre.

“I will be making further representations to the Minister for Regional Development regarding this matter again.”

A DRD spokeswoman yesterday said the traffic study was ongoing with no completion date yet available.
