Law changes are concerning

SIR, — If devolved government is not restored by October 21, then radical changes to the law on abortion and marriage will take place in Northern Ireland.

Recently I attended the silent demonstration at Stormont along with over 20,000 others to protest about changes being implemented to the abortion laws in Northern Ireland. Hundreds of health professionals have expressed their opposition to any change in the law.

Thankfully, the 1967 Abortion Act in the rest of the United Kingdom was never extended to Northern Ireland. For 52 years we have been protected and 100,000 people are alive, who otherwise would have been killed in the womb.

It is wrong to use a few complex cases to open the floodgate for abortion on demand. The Bible has been the foundation of our society and has much to say about the womb and the protection for the unborn.

In Genesis 25:23 The Lord said to Rebekah, “Two nations are in thy womb.”  In Job 1:21 “Naked came I out of my mothers womb…the Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away.”

Job 31:15 says: “He that made me in the womb” while Psalm 127:3 says: “Children are an heritage of the Lord and the fruit of the womb is his reward.”

Psalm 139:13 says God has “covered me in my mothers womb” while Isaiah 44:2 states: “The Lord that made thee and formed thee from the womb”, while the Virgin Mary was told in Luke 1:31 “And, behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son and shalt call his name Jesus”.

When Mary and her cousin Elisabeth met, while both with child, John the Baptist, according to his mother Elizabeth in Luke 1:44

declared, “Leaped in my womb for joy.”

Exodus 20:13 states “thou shalt not kill” which is the sixth commandment and includes the time the baby is in the womb. Exodus 21:22-23 states: “If men strive and hurt a woman with child…he shall be surely punished…”

For those who have experienced and are troubled about abortion, it is great to know in Psalm 145:8 that it says: “The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger, and of great mercy.”  Also in 1 John 1:9 — “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Marriage is a foundational institution in society, established at the beginning of the world that God created.

In Genesis 1:27, God created Adam and Eve “…male and female created he them” and marriage was instituted by God in Genesis 2:23-24. It says:  “And Adam said…she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife and they shall be one flesh.”

Since the world began, men and women have been committing themselves to each other in life long marriages.

Jesus said in Matthew 24:38-39 “for as in the days that were before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark. And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”

Marriage between a man and a woman is universal and is valid in the eyes of God when a Christian, Atheist etc. publicly commits themselves to each other.

In such cases, religious or civil marriages are both valid. The different natures of men and women complement each other. Good marriages help families and society and promotes a caring attitude.

Studies have shown that marriages brings benefits for adults, children and society at large. Marriage promotes happiness in the couple and a strong marriage brings stability to the community. In order to have children, there must be a man and a woman.

Children need a male and female role model more than ever today. God in the Bible has only one plan for marriage, that a man and a woman be joined together for life, to the exclusion of all others. The Government can pass legislation, but God’s idea of marriage is the one that matters.   Out of love Christians, defend the true definition of marriage.
