Fantastic response as CD is launched in Castlewellan

17 December 2014

A MUSICAL extravaganza held in Castlewellan last weekend raised £1,664 for two local charities.

The Lodge was the venue for a fantastic night of music in aid of the Public Initiative for the Prevention of Suicide and Self Harm (PIPS) and the Mind Your Mate and Yourself (MYMY) initiatives.

Organised by Mona Owens, Saturday night’s magical night of music featured Fr. Martin O’Hagan, a member of The Priests ensemble, who was accompanied on the piano by Mr. Gerry Doherty.

Also taking part in the event were Annsborough Pipe Band, vocalist Joanna Brown, Irish dancer Paul Flynn, traditional Irish music group Comhalta Ceoltoiri Eireann and the Mind Your Mate choir.

Also on the night, a new CD featuring 16 artistes from the local area was formally launched. The CD is now on sale, priced £10, in a number of outlets including JRs in Castlewellan and Smyths Music in Newcastle.

Mona, who was delighted with the support Saturday night’s extravaganza received, explained the proceeds from the sale of the CD will go towards the “wonderful work” of PIPS and MYMY throughout the community.

“This wonderful body of people reaches out to those in society who are in despair, who are depressed and in very low spirits,” she continued.

“These volunteers are there to offer hope to every individual that comes through their door. It’s a very welcome place where you are offered a cup of tea or coffee and a warm, friendly smile.”

Mona said in order for this great work to continue, PIPS and MYMYM require funding and she hopes the CD will help raise money.

“The CD sends out a message of hope, healing and love to the community and features amongst others the Rev. Ken Nelson and Fr. Dennis McKinlay,” she explained.

“My hope is that the CD will raise funds for the great work of PIPS

and MYMY does in reaching out to people who are in despair, who are suffering from depression and whose minds are trapped in the negative. The good people behind this initiative can help break the negative and turn all thoughts to the positive. They give people hope.”

Reflecting on last Saturday’s music extravaganza and CD launch, Mona said everyone had a “fantastic night.” She said she was so proud of everyone who took part and the fact £1,664 was raised.

Mona added: “The CD is now on sale and I hope people will buy it to raise funds for two very worthy causes.”
