Cormac going from Ardglass to Walker Cup

26 August 2015

ARDGLASS golfer Cormac Sharvin’s star just gets higher and higher.

The 22 year-old has been included in the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team to take on the USA at Royal Lytham and St Anne’s next month.

Cormac is one of a record number of five Irish golfers in the ten-strong team to face the cream of American amateur golf in the biennial match on September 12-13.

He said his selection was the “icing on the cake” after an impressive season in which he won the prestigious Brabazon Trophy at the English Men’s Open Strokeplay Championship in June.

He finished runner-up at the Irish Amateur Open for the second year running and was also second in the Lytham Trophy.

“I’ve played really well all season and it was nice to break through and win the Brabazon,” Cormac said.

“Playing in the Walker Cup is the best thing you can do in amateur golf if you are from Britain and Ireland.”

It’s a remarkable achievement for Cormac, given that he only took up golf at the age of 15.

His coach, Ardglass club professional Paul Vaughan, described him as a “phenomenon.”

“He is absolutely brilliant and has the potential to be a massive star. His swing is that good,” Paul said.

“When he started playing golf his handicap came down very quickly. He is a very natural player and my job now is just to keep an eye on things.

“His selection for the Walker Cup team is the biggest thing that has happened to Ardglass Golf Club. Everyone at the club is very proud of him.”

Cormac is a student at the University of Stirling and will be starting the fourth year of a BA Honours Sports Studies straight after the Walker Cup.

Joining him in the team will be fellow Stirling student Jack McDonald. Together they will be trying win back the cup after the USA’s 17-9 victory in the last match at the National Golf Links of Americxa in Southampton, New York.
