FRESH trouble has flared at the Killough Road area of Downpatrick.

The windscreen of a car was damaged after the vehicle was pelted with stones on Monday evening.

The incident has been condemned by South Down MLA Colin McGrath and local councillor John Trainor.

Mr McGrath said: “This type of behaviour is unacceptable and needs to be addressed. My SDLP colleagues and I will be seeking an inter-agency, cross-party meeting to discuss the issues at this part of the town via the Policing and Community Safety Partnership.”

Cllr Trainor said the trouble was “unfair” on residents and businesses in the area and condemned what he described as a small minority for continuing to cause “mayhem and destruction”.

He continued: “It is worrying for local people that the response to the trouble from police is slow and inconsistent and has resulted in low public confidence in the organisation’s ability to address the issue.”

Cllr Trainor said he believes that a joint approach involving the police, statutory bodies, politicians and the local community is required to address the ongoing issues in the area.
