Tyrella’s Gareth going climbing for Uganda

3 August 2022

A TYRELLA will be scaling the height of Mount Everest next week — without leaving Co Down.

Gareth Macauley will be running up Slieve Donard ten-and-a-half times on Friday, August 12, to raise funds for a clean water project in Africa.

He’s taking on the gruelling challenge through what is known as Everesting.

The concept is simple — pick any hill, anywhere in the world, and climb it repeatedly until you reach 8,848 metres, which is the height of Mount Everest.

Gareth aims to complete the climb in one day with no sleep. Proceeds will go towards repairing or drilling boreholes and installing a clean water pump in Uganda.

Gareth went to Uganda in 2015 with a team representing the Down Battalion of the Boys’ Brigade and taught some young men how to plaster.

While there, he felt sorry for the people having to walk so far to get clean drinking water.

Gareth attended Clough Boys’ Brigade as a boy. In more recent years he served as a leader at Killinchy BB and is now planning to help the leaders at Crossgar BB.
