Try fest as ‘Hinch oust Randalstown

Try fest as ‘Hinch oust Randalstown

10 October 2018

BALLYNAHINCH U-16s continued their fine early season form with an eight-try performance at home to an understrength Randalstown outfit.

Despite being without some front line backs, the boys put on an excellent display on a great day for running rugby.

They were a little flat early in the match, but settled down after ten minutes and began producing some of the patterns they have been working hard on in training.

Winger Mark McAleenan opened the scoring after great work from number 8 Morgan Croskery and as the ‘Hinch pack began to dominate further scores from Croskery and hooker Kai Shields stretched the lead.

The game was effectively over when ‘Hinch scored an excellent team try just before half-time.

Prop Shaun Lin made 20 metres from inside his own half and from a quick ruck blindside flanker Matthew Torney carried hard from first receiver to punch another hole in the Randalstown defence. Out half Caleb Maguire then spread the ball wide and the flying McAleenan scorched in for the score.

‘Hinch emptied the bench at half-time and Randalstown had much more of the play in the second half, but further scores from the impressive centre Cameron Lyons, lock Matthew Reynolds and the hard-working Torney put the result beyond doubt.

Randalstown mounted a sustained late assault on the ‘Hinch line late in the second half as they searched for a consolation score, but to their credit, the home side dug in to protect their line and drove upfield to earn a succession of close range scrums.

Lyons brought up the half century with his second try after an excellent angled run and flat pass from Croskery, who also kicked six conversions in a fine display.

Ballynahinch will be pleased to follow up their victory over Instonians with another strong league

performance and there is a great spirit in the squad with plenty of competition for places.

They will need to be on their game for the next League match away to Carrickfergus on October 20.
