Trio’s house music track is big hit on Love Island

IT’S been the TV hit of the summer and Love Island has given the biggest platform for a new house track from three local men.

The debut single from Gold 88 — otherwise known as Downpatrick men Luke Papenfus and Dan McCann with Niall Bailey from Carryduff — had their song Hold Me Tonight (Making Love) used over the end credits of Love Island on July 26.

The show hopes to pair up young singles in a Majorcan villa and rated its most successful series to date after getting an audience viewing of six million people.

The exposure that the brief play on the ITV2 programme gave the track has helped keep the it at number 91 in the Shazam charts UK and Ireland at number 94.

Dan, who now lives in Manchester, said that the trio have scored an enviable success.

“I just decided to get in contact with the music producer to offer our track to play and she said it was all down to what happened on the show,” said Dan.

“I was told in the morning, on the third last show of the series, that it was going to be used. It’s something that most major artists would love to get their tracks used.”

Hold Me Tonight has established itself in the very competitive dance music scene since it was released in April. It reached No 3 in the UK club charts and Italian house chart.

Not only has the track — featuring vocals from Belfast singer Kate Astor — proved to be a hit with clubbers, it has also been streamed hundreds of thousands of times on digital music service platforms.

“On Spotify, we have over 100,000 streams, on iTunes there’s over 100,000 streams and the same on Amazon Music,” said Dan.

The trio scored another major hit last Friday when it was the lead track played at Radio 1’s Ibiza Rocks event.

Dan explained that it was on Friday Night Dance Anthems which is seen as a warm-up for the main show.

All of the local trio have strong music links. Luke (28), the son of Relish’s Ken Papenfus, is a member of local rock group Dahlia. Dan  (31) is a rapper, DJ and house music artist in his own right and Niall (31) is a DJ in the Irish club scene.
