Top marks for Emma after she secures spot at Oxford University

7 April 2021

A STUDENT from Shimna Integrated College in Newcastle has gained a place on the Oxford University UNIQ programme.

Emma Keown is a Year 13 student who applied for and achieved the prestigious placement during lockdown.

She will be taking part in the digital version of the university’s residential summer school. The programme is very competitive and exists to encourage highly able students to consider applying to Oxford.

It is hoped that the placement will help Emma decide whether she will want to apply to Oxford to study medicine after her A-Levels.

Shimna principal Kevin Lambe congratulated Emma on her achievement.

He said: “We are particularly proud of Emma’s achievement, which she has earned for herself during lockdown. Emma is a wonderful student who also makes an outstanding contribution to the Integrated ethos of our school.”

Mr Lambe also said how much he appreciated the commitment of his students for their working during the recent lockdown and his teaching staff in supporting them.

“I also want to pay tribute to the outstanding efforts of our Year 14 students in completing their UCAS applications, their success rate in receiving offers from the universities of their choice, and also the efforts of Year 13 students in taking advantage of placements, of summer schools and virtual work experience.”

Mr Lambe added: “I must also pay tribute to our careers advisor, Alicia Rooney, who keeps our

students abreast of every opportunity.”
