ASSUMPTION Grammar School in Ballynahinch is proud to present the much-loved musical, The Wizard of Oz, next week.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was originally a children’s novel, written in 1900 by L Frank Baum, who adapted it into a successful musical, which was performed for the first time in 1902 at the Chicago Grand Opera House.

It was then made into the celebrated movie in 1939, with Judy Garland playing Dorothy and wearing the iconic ruby slippers and singing the famous song, Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

The Wizard of Oz won the Academy Award for Best Original Music Score in 1940 and also the Satellite Award for Best Classic DVD in 2005. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Wizard of Oz musical was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award in 2012 for Best Musical Revival.

The story starts with Dorothy’s house being whirled up in a vicious tornado with Dorothy inside. The tornado s the house in the Land of Oz. Dorothy embarks on a journey along the yellow brick road to the Wizard of Oz to ask for help to find her way home.

On the way Dorothy will meet new friends and fight against a new foe.

Assumption Grammar’s students are so excited to finally perform this play. Sit back, relax and join them on Wednesday, October 16, Thursday, October 17, and Friday, October 18, on a magical journey to Oz.
