Take to the lough and paddle for local charity

CANCER Focus Northern Ireland is encouraging people to register for a fundraising paddle around Strangford Lough.

‘Paddle the Lough’ will be held on May 17 and 18 when participants will spend two days canoeing along Strangford Lough with camping overnight on Salt Island.

The challenge has been designed as a unique way for participants to experience the local countryside and meet new people while raising funds for local people with cancer.

No previous canoeing experience is necessary as training will be provided on the event and participants will be under the supervision of qualified staff at all times.

Andrea Kernohan, who took part in a previous canoe challenge, had no previous canoeing experience.

“Initially I felt like a quivering novice but it didn’t take long to get into the swing of things,” she said.

“Canoeing and wild camping are completely out of my comfort zone but the experience was terrific and I would recommend it to anyone.

“It was also a great way to see part of our countryside which you can’t access any other way.

“I love a challenge and although we faced wind and rain, it was a really enjoyable event where everything was doable.

“After the weekend we felt like we had really achieved something personally, as well as raising funds for a great local cause.”

Participants in the challenge will paddle in two man Canadian canoes although you do not have to register as a team to take part.

Registration is £30 per person to register and participants are asked to raise a minimum of £255 in sponsorship.

Tents, camping equipment and Canadian canoes are included.
