LOCAL Manchester United fans have picked their favourite Reds team of the Premier League era.

Members of the Downpatrick Manchester United Supporters’ Club were asked to pick their favourite players since the start of the Premier League in 1992.

They were tasked with selecting a best eleven along with five subs. All nominations were counted and whoever came closest to the most selected team would win a £50 prize.

There was a strong consensus in the choice of eight players. Variations primarily were between Nemanja Vidic, Jaap Stam and Rio Ferdinand for the centre back pairing and between Eric Cantona and David Beckham. Paul Scholes was the one player who received 100% of the vote, while Roy Keane missed out on one nomination.

The team chosen was as follows: Peter Schmeichel, Gary Neville, Denis Irwin, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Eric Cantona, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The five substitutes were Edwin Van Der Sar, Patrice Evra, Jaap Stam,

Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Beckham.

Notable players to miss out were Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister, Mark Hughes, Andy Cole and Bryan Robson, though they were nominated by some of the members.

The only current player to feature was David De Gea, but was well behind two other keepers, Schmeichel and Raimond van der Gouw.

No one got the top eleven totally correct, but five members — Joe Ritchie, Ross O’Shea, Shane McEvoy, Terry Holland and Damien McEvoy — picked ten correctly. It was agreed that the prize money would not be split and will be given to charity.
