Strangford B are champions again

Strangford B are champions again

22 January 2020

IN a busy night at Inverbrena hall, Strangford B claimed the Division 2 title for the third consecutive year and although the winning margin was impressive, Drumaness made the journey home thinking that they were unfortunate not to get a draw.

Donald Campbell, who has been in exceptional form all season, got Strangford off to a winning run with a straight games win over Pat Mullholland.

Strangford team captain Michael Carey, whose experience and influence has been an important factor in his team’s success this season, made it 2-0 with a similar winning margin over in-form Charlie Murray.

Colin McKinty, in the side for Marty Flynn, made it 3-0 with a four game victory against Aaron Mulholland.

Carey and McKinty made it 4-0 getting home 11-5 in tight fifth game over the Mullholland father and son competition. Donald Campbell got his team to the winning post with a 3-0 win over Charlie Murray.

Pat Mullholland started the fightback with a straight games advantage over Michael Carey and in a game that could have gone either way, Murray let a two point lead at 10-8 slip, having led 2-1 before losing in five games.

This win ensured the points for the home team, and although the Mullholland duo put two good wins on the card in the last two games of the night, the visitors will reflect on the two games that could have earned them a point. Congratulations Strangford B.

ST John’s ensured a second place finish with a comfortable win over Strangford B, weakened by the absence of Colin McKinty on duty with the B team.

The Poland family have a long, proud and successful association with the Lecale League from the 1960s and played an important role in the league’s continuance.

Vincey and Ann Poland have had their fair share of success over the years and Sean has developed into an excellent player. The visitors were always going to have too much in their armoury for the home side, but credit to Strangford as they made St John’s work hard for every point.

Vincey Poland got St John’s off to a good start with a good, straight games win over John McCusker.

Paddy McConville, nowadays a social player, who is always ready to help out the club he has a long and successful history with, lost to Sean Poland by a similar score, before Niall Houghan, whose regular practice is beginning to pay off, pulled one back with a four game win over Ann Poland.

The next two games went the way of the visitors, and although McCusker recorded two further wins for Strangford, St John’s reeled off the last three games to go home the victors.

The handicap cup competition will commence on Monday, February 3. All relevant details will be forwarded to team secretaries shortly. The Liam Polly Memorial competition, in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care, will take place on Thursday, January 30, at Inverbrena Hall Strangford.
