AN enterprising young baker from Teconnaught, who has been making cakes and tray bakes for health care staff and other key workers during the Covid-19 lockdown, has been making headlines for another reason.

Ryan Bogues – the man behind Ryan’s Cookie Box — has taken part in a film which promotes artists with Down Syndrome.

Artists In Lockdown explores the life and work of 15 different artists from seven countries and shines a light on how they used art to help cope with life during lockdown.

Produced by the global arts organisation Heart & Sold, the film also unearths the talents of big-hearted 25 year-old Ryan, who lives on the Drumnaconagher Road.

Unbeknown to many, when Ryan isn’t in the kitchen baking he is a multi-talented artist who enjoys working with pencil and watercolours and is also an enthusiastic photographer.

During the production, Ryan can be seen baking and delivering his Not All Superheroes Wear Capes thank you hampers to staff at the Downe Hospital.

Ryan’s mum, Hazel, said Heart & Sold was founded by Suzie Moffatt, whose son, Max, was born with Down Syndrome in 2007.

“Her organisation gives a platform for artists all over the world with Down Syndrome, to create, educate, inspire, sell and most importantly change the sometimes wrongful perception toward art created by those with a disability or a condition.”

Suzie said: “With this film we wanted to document this moment of time in history and to offer a glimpse into the worlds of our artists and how it was affecting their work and their lives.

“As the pandemic unfolded, we began to see how our artists were using their art and creativity to cope with what was going on in the outside world and we have loved seeing the beauty that has been created in these trying times.

“We especially enjoyed watching the footage from Ryan and were so proud to see how he

is brightening the days of hundreds of key workers during the crisis.”
