19 January 2022

VOLUNTEERS from the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team went to the assistance of an injured hill walker last Sunday afternoon.

The alarm was raised just before 1.45pm after the person fell, sustaining an upper leg injury whilst ascending Chimney Rock.

Due to the nature of the injury, with the casualty unable to load bear and the nature of the terrain, the group the person was with opted to call for help.

The rescue team responded and, given the location, asked for assistance from the PSNI Air Support Unit. After locating the injured walker, the casualty was packaged and evacuated off technical terrain to a suitable landing site in the valley below.

The PSNI helicopter was able to airlift the casualty to Donard Park for onward transfer to hospital.

Nineteen rescue team members who responded to the call for help were stood down at 5.50pm.
