KILLOUGH is in line for a social housing boost.

The Oaklee Housing Association has bought a former unoccupied private housing development to provide seven two-bedroomed homes in the village.

News that the new homes will soon be available for families on the waiting list for social housing in Killough has been welcomed by councillor Éamonn Mac Con Midhe.

He said Oaklee’s plans are being supported by the Housing Executive which recognises the new development will help address the social housing need in Killough.

Councillor Mac Con Midhe said although a recent survey to determine the social housing need in Killough found that 14 homes are required, the Oaklee proposal is particularly welcome and will help address what he described as the “chronic shortage of social housing in the Killough area.”

He continued: “Single people, small families and older persons continue to dominate the ever-lengthening waiting lists for social housing and the seven homes will go some way to meeting some of that demand.

“In today’s financial climate, where it’s almost impossible  to secure a mortgage or raise

the deposit for private rental,  this announcement is all the more welcome. We also can’t forget the impact impending welfare cuts will have on many families.”

Councillor Mac Con Midhe has also urged people on the waiting list for social homes in Killough to contact both the Housing Executive and Oaklee Housing to register their interest in the seven new homes that are to become available.
