Primary school pupils take part in home safety scheme

13 February 2019

OVER 1,000 primary school children from across Co Down are visiting Bee Safe education days this week.

The events, run by Home Accident Prevention Down District (HAP) are being held in Downpatrick, Ballynahinch and Castlewellan and are part of a multi-agency safety initiative.

The initiative helps to inform children through role-play and real life scenarios about a range of health and safety issues that children may face in every day life.

Much like a programme, it aims to teach children how to keep themselves safe and avoid dangerous situations.

Demonstrations for the children will be given by the PSNI, the Health and Safety Executive, Translink, the Fire Service and NIE.

Down HAP chairperson Sinead Trainor said: “This will be the 11th consecutive year of the Down Bee Safe Campaign which we are delighted to be running.

“I am delighted so many children are taking part in this important initiative and I am confident participants will enjoy the event as we have tried to include elements of fun throughout the programme, keeping them light-hearted while still conveying the important safety messages.

“I look forward to working with the agencies involved and appreciate the funding support from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, the Public Health Agency and Newry, Mourne and Down Policing and Community Safety Partnership.”
