Portaferry Action Cancer shop members raise £13k in past year

THE Portaferry Action Cancer shop and its volunteers have been honoured for their amazing fundraising effort of raising £13,000 over the last 12 months.

Headed up by Ellen Allen and her small group of dedicated volunteers, they continued to raise money throughout year even with the charity shop moving from The Square to Cuan Place last year.

A spokesperson for Action Cancer said: “This is a remarkable result for the shop and is a testimony to the generosity and support of the local community in donating their time to open it, donating items to sell within it and the people who purchase from it.

“Since the Portaferry Action Cancer Community group was formed, the total amount raised by them is an unbelievable £200,056.63 which would equate to funding 2,500 breast screenings.”

Action Cancer operates the UK’s first 3D digital breast cancer and provides free breast screening to 10,000 women each year aged 40-49 or 70 plus — which is outside of NHS screening age range.

The charity also provides free health checks for men and women aged 16 and over which includes blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol, and body composition analysis. Action Cancer also operates the Big Bus mobile screening service.
