DOWN District is to be showcased to the world as the Olympic Flame goes on a five day tour of Northern Ireland.
Torchbearers will travel through Newcastle, Dundrum, Clough, Downpatrick, Crossgar, Saintfield and Ballynahinch on June 7 as part of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.
In Northern Ireland for five days between June 3 and 7, the flame will pass through towns and villages, take in significant landmarks along the way and stop at all 26 councils. The flame will also be carried for sections of the route using various modes of transport.
Sixty-five Northern Ireland communities have been announced as being on the route and evening celebration events are expected in Newcastle and Downpatrick.
A spokeswoman for Down Council said: “Whilst the exact details of the torch relay route are yet to be confirmed, Down District Council will liaise with host community groups who would be welcoming the torch as it enters their town or village.
“Where possible, we will be working with the community groups to discuss what support can be provided by the council.”
The street by street detail will be confirmed next year. For further details visit www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelaymap
