A NEW housing development at Raholp outside Downpatrick has been officially named. And it’s all thanks to a local schoolgirl.

Niamh McGrath, a P4 pupil at nearby St. Patrick’s Primary, came up with the name Carraig View which was chosen by the Clanmill Housing Association.

The Association approached the school in search of an imaginative name for the new development of eight much-needed family homes.

Niamh’s winning entry was chosen from many inventive names suggested by her fellow pupils at St. Patrick’s. Clanmill officials chose Niamh’s entry as carraig, is Irish for rock and reflects the site’s location close to the historic Mass Rock in Raholp.

The new homes are scheduled for completion in the spring and are being built to high energy efficiency and design specifications which ensure added security for tenants and flexibility of adaptation if required at a later date.

Clanmill chief executive, Clare McCarty, is delighted with the new name for the Raholp development.

“We were delighted by the interest the children and teachers at St. Patrick’s Primary have shown in our development and very impressed by the standard and range of names suggested.

“Niamh has come up with the perfect name for the scheme and we’re looking forward to welcoming tenants to their new homes at Carraig View in the spring.”

South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has welcomed the provision of new social homes in Raholp. She said the development will help address the issue of housing need in this rural community.

“This development is a very good example of the work that can be done and the provision that can be created when the Department for Social Development, Housing Associations and the local community work together,” she continued.
