FIVE students from Shimna Integrated College in Newcastle have been awarded a Carson Bursary.
Year 12 pupils Uisce Daley, Mia Pobloth, Saoirse Cassidy-Dawson, Mya Brennan and Catherine Rooney won the bursary with the support of Maja Wierzchowiak in the school’s costume department;.
“As creatives themselves, the students have been very moved by the plight of the creative industries during lockdown,” a school spokesperson said.
“Their winning project is called ‘Professional Practice’ and will give them the opportunity to perform and record their GCSE drama performance in a professional theatre.
“Funded by the Carson Awards through the Integrated Education Fund, the plan is that the project will help the students support the arts during a very difficult time, at the same time as gaining excellent professional experience themselves.”
Drama teacher Ciaran Milligan said: “It is fantastic to see the students rewarded for a project they dreamed up in response to real need in the artistic community during lockdown.”
