A COLLECTION organised by Newcastle Lions Club on Saturday raised almost £500 for charity.

Newcastle Lions would like to thank everyone who donated and stress that all the money will be going to a designated charity.

Newcastle Lions, and other Lions clubs throughout Ireland, have been targeting the problem of diabetes this year.

World Diabetes Day takes place on November 14 and last Tuesday Dr Kieran Walshe spoke of his personal journey  with type 1 diabetes.

He said that it had taken 100 years since insulin was first discovered for it to be delivered safely.

Today, due to advances in bio technology, patients are controlling their blood glucose using a glucose sensor and a Bluetooth-enabled insulin pump from an algorithm on their mobile phones.

Although this is a good news story much more needs to be done as the incidence of diabetes is increasing in both the developed and underdeveloped world. Diabetes the eighth biggest cause of death in the world.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body stops producing enough insulin, or the produced insulin does not work properly. It is managed by healthy eating, regular physical activity and medication, which may include insulin injections.

A spokesperson for Newcastle Lions Club said: “Newcastle Lions are committed to playing their part in this work and the help and support of the local community in this very worthwhile project is greatly valued.”
