New home for Newcastle FC

3 March 2021

NEWCASTLE Football Club’s ambitious plans for a new home have been given a huge boost.

An application by the club to relocate has been approved by planners and is expected be confirmed by Newry, Mourne, and Down Council’s Planning Committee next week.

The club hopes to leave its current home at Shimna College and move to Church Hill, off the Castlewellan Road, just outside the town.

The exciting development involves the construction of three pitches, including a full-sized intermediate standard grass pitch. There will be two other pitches, one of which will have an

artificial 3G surface.

The club is also planning to build a clubhouse along with seating for spectators, fencing and car parking facilities, as well as a new access.

Club officials are currently tight-lipped about their plans, which would represent a major boost for soccer in the Newcastle area.

The club’s first team has enjoyed considerable success, completing a memorable double in the 2000-2001 season when it won the Cochrane Corry Cup and Division 2B of the Amateur League.

Newcastle won Division 2A in 2002-03 and Division IB in 2004/05. The club currently plays Division 1A.

The club also has two other teams which compete in the Newcastle League.
