Mrs Gladys Wallace

THE community is Newcastle was saddened by the recent death in the Ulster Hospital, Dundonald, of Mrs Gladys Wallace, of 23 South Promenade, at the age of 92.

Mrs Wallace (née Rooney) was born on February 25, 1925 in a cottage in what is now Tollymore Forest Park. She would spend her entire life in Newcastle or Bryansford and loved the scenery, particularly the sea and the mountains.

She was well known to older residents of the town through her years of work as a bookkeeper for the Annesley Estate.

Blessed with a keen mind, she enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and sudoku. Though confined to a wheelchair by severe osteoarthritis, she had a smile for everyone she met.

Mrs Wallace, who was widowed, is survived by her son, Andrew, his wife, Martina, and by her cousin, Norman, and his wife, Margaret. She will also be greatly missed by her devoted neighbours and best friends, Vera Gray and Edna McNeilly.

Canon Ian Ellis conducted the funeral service in St Colman’s Church, Tullybrannigan Road, Newcastle, on January 29.
