MRS. Sarah Brennan, of Drumnaconnor, near Teconnaught, died peacefully at her home in the company of her loving family on Saturday, July 21. She was 86.
Mrs. Brennan was a devoted wife to Seamus for 54 years and loving mother to daughters Ellen and Susan, son-in-law Paul and grandchildren Paula and Lee.
She was the last surviving member of the McMullan family and had mourned the loss of her husband Seamus just six weeks prior to her own passing.
Due to family circumstances Sarah was unable to stay on at school, despite being a most promising student who won prizes for her academic achievements. Despite her lack of formal secondary education Sarah’s ability was obvious as she was able to assist initially her daughters and then in later years her grandchildren with language, science, English and mathematical homeworks and undertake proof reading of dissertations with ease.
In her youth Sarah and her sister Peg played table tennis at a high level and at one stage they were the All-Ireland doubles champions. Her love of sport continued throughout her life and in later years she was a well known member of Owenbeg Bowling Club, playing both outdoor and indoor bowls. She was a popular member of the club and enjoyed the social aspect of the game which resulted in her travelling extensively and making many new friends over the years.
Sarah was a very artistic lady who could turn her hand to anything, ranging from crochet, bread making on the griddle and cake making to fancy dress design.
As an outgoing person, she enjoyed being surrounded by the people she loved and anyone who knew her commented on her approachable, friendly nature and zest for life.
She was a hardworking lady, who for many years had worked tirelessly with her husband on the farm. Sarah had an infectious sense of fun and could always be relied upon to have a kind word of encouragement or comfort for those who needed it.
She is sadly missed but will be lovingly remembered as a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and cherished friend to all who knew her.
The funeral took place on Monday, July 23 to Holy Family Church, Teconnaught, and was followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery. Fr. Maurice Henry and Fr. Patrick McKenna officiated.
