Mr Michael Robinson

THE death has taken place of Mr Michael Robinson of 3 Dufferin Park, Downpatrick. He was 60.

Mr Robinson passed away in the early hours of Saturday, February 18, after a long illness, bravely borne.

After a happy childhood in Edward Street, Michael — who was educated at St Patrick’s Boys’ Primary School and De La Salle Secondary School — became a highly skilled bricklayer, a trade which he pursued until ill health intervened 23 years ago, forcing his early retirement.

Michael was noted for his good nature, kindness and love for sport, especially football. In his early years, he was a very talented footballer himself and played for Park Green in the Downpatrick Youth League and in later years for Downpatrick Rec. He also enjoyed Gaelic football.

Michael was also involved in the management of the Celtic Bhoys Youth League teams, for whom his son Martin played.

A true family man, Michael, who married his beloved wife Margaret in 1976, had four children, Michael, Ann-Marie, Lisa and Martin, and he took great delight in their achievements. As time went on, Michael was devoted to his grandchildren, Rachel, Grace, Lucy, Olivia and Sophie.

The large attendance at his funeral Mass in St Patrick’s Church, Downpatrick, which was celebrated by Very Rev Brian Donnelly PP (Plumbridge and Ardstraw East) and friend of the family, assisted by Very Rev Maurice Henry PE CC, was an indication of the esteem in which Michael and his family are held.

In his homily, Fr Donnelly spoke of the firm foundation on which Michael’s strong faith had been built.

“It is the passing on of this faith to his family and friends which would be his legacy,” he said.

Michael’s brothers, Liam and Kieran and sisters Brenda, Anne and Martina have lost a much loved brother.

Michael’s Month’s Mind Mass will be celebrated in St Brigid’s Church, Rathkeltair Road, Downpatrick, at 7pm this Saturday, March 18.
