THE death on March 16 of Mr. Robin McKibbin, a popular and larger than life local farmer, has been widely mourned.
A man for all seasons, he knew intimately the turns and demands of the yearly cycle and responded appropriately with enthusiasm and without complaint.
A keen farmer, he expanded his father’s farm and adapted to modern machinery and farming techniques. In the livestock sales in Downpatrick, Robin was simply and affectionately known as ‘McKibbin.’
Robin’s father and mother, with their family of nine, had moved to the farm in Clough in the 1940s. Robin, as the eldest boy, followed in his father’s footsteps.
In 1961 Robin married Anne Marie and they set up their home on the family farm. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and enjoyed a home life of great warmth and generosity.
His engaging personality meant that he added colour and life to any occasion, especially family gatherings. He had a special gift for reciting poetry and recalling anecdotes with his earthy sense of humour. Importantly, Robin was a kind man who was willing to advise and help those in difficulty.
Robin’s death leaves an irreplaceable gap in the lives of his family and friends. However, his well-rounded and well-lived life will be a lasting legacy.
Robin leaves behind his wife, Anne Marie, five children and nine grandchildren.
