A DOWN High School student has won a prestigious international animation award.

A-Level Moving Image Arts student Lydia McDowell (below) enjoyed success at the esteemed Adelaide Kids Film Festival, a film-making competition staged in Australia.

Lydia received the accolade for her animated movie Fairydust a short film previously shortlisted in the national finals of a competition held by KIDS4KIDS.

This organisation promotes the use of creative media by young people and Lydia’s piece was selected for the final round of the renowned Australian festival.

She is one of a number of students following the Moving Image Arts course at Down High and is well aware of the booming state of the film industry in Northern Ireland today.

Lydia heard of her success in the senior animation category last month and admitted the news came as “quite a shock.”

She added: “The process of making such an animation is long, often complex, but very rewarding. To receive an award like this makes me feel very proud.”
