A YOUNG Saintfield schoolboy is proving to be a knockout in the boxing ring.

Eleven year-old Luke McAuley, who fights out of Ormeau Road Boxing Club where his father, Gareth, is his coach, won the 37kg title at the Armagh and Down Championships in Silverbridge, Co Armagh, on Sunday.

The St Colman’s High and Sixth Form College student learned the basics of his trade at East Down Boxing Club before joining his father’s club and he believes he owes the coaches there a great deal.

The latest in a long line of boxers from the McAuley family, Luke blasted his way to the title when he knocked out his opponent from John Bosco, Newry, in the first round of the final.

This was his first ever competition, but he showed he was a real contender when he accounted for his Clonard opponent 3-0 in the semi-final.

Luke is now back in the gym and preparing for the Antrim Open Championships in a few weeks’ time.
