Long-haired Roisin to shave head for charity

19 September 2012

A DOWNPATRICK youth worker will shave off her two foot tresses next Friday in a dramatic bid to raise money for the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children.

Roisin Mohan has organised a fantastic fund-raising circus night at St. Mary’s High School for the event, which will draw to a close when an old friend, who is a hairdresser, shaves off her hair.

Roisin, is excited about the potential for the event to raise money for the NICFC and said she decided to organise a fundraiser for the charity because of her own work with children.

As a youth worker, who works across a number of centres including Patrician Youth Club, Roisin said she was keen to offer a helping hand to an organisation that specifically looks after young people suffering from cancer and their families.

She said she has many friends who are professionally trained circus performers and who had agreed to perform at St. Mary’s High on Friday evening.

These performers will carry out eight 10-minute cabaret acts including juggling, acro-balancing and possibly even razor blade swallowing. She has also secured a Samba band for the night.

Roisin, who has measured her hair, which now stretches to 33.5 inches, said she was fearless about having it cut.

She said she thought Friday’s fundraiser was the perfect opportunity to make money for charity by having her head dramatically shaved.Roisin’s friend, Crossgar hairdresser Tracy Megoran, will carry out the head shave and Roisin says she is hoping to raise further money from her locks by having it recycled into fake moustaches for the November fundraising event “Movember.”

Anyone who would like to go the circus night at St. Mary’s High School is urged to do so for charity. The event will run from 8pm-10pm on Friday, September 28, and tickets are £10.
