Killyleagh oil thefts misery

OIL thieves have struck at the Kerry estate in Killyleagh, just days after new home heating systems were installed.

The joy of having the new systems provided turned to despair for two Housing Executive tenants after their oil was siphoned off by criminals. A failed attempt was also made to steal oil from a third tank.

The incidents have been condemned by local councillor Billy Walker, who said he was concerned at the increase in oil thefts across the district and appealed to people to take steps to secure their tanks.

He is also advising home owners and tenants to put locks on their oil tanks to deter criminals from targeting them. But the Killyleagh councillor admitted that stealing home heating oil is regarded by some as the “perfect crime.”

He said: “When people see an oil lorry outside someone’s home they automatically think they are getting a top up. Unfortunately, in a number of instances, it’s actually thieves draining people’s tanks.

“Unless the drivers of these oil tanks are challenged, people will automatically assume homeowners are being topped up.”

Councillor Walker said anyone who spots any suspicious activity outside a person’s home should contact the police immediately.

He said reputable home

heating oil distributors have nothing to fear from being challenge by police if someone raises concern about a vehicle parked outside homes or business premises.

Councillor Walker added: “People need to be vigilant when it comes to protecting their home heating oil. As the price of the commodity continues to increase, criminals will inevitably look to step up their activity.

“I sincerely hope if people are prosecuted the courts will send a strong message that this behaviour won’t be tolerated.”
