Killough marine site plans for boat trips and fishing hub

8 July 2020

KILLOUGH could soon become a marine mecca thanks to a Co Down charity which helps people who have been injured or are in need of care.

Let’s Do Events has taken over the lease of Killough harbour and under its guardianship wants to see the facilities be a focus for the community, as well as for charities and organisations that could make use of the opportunities.

One of the first projects, when Covid restrictions permit, is an event for frontline health staff.

Let’s Do Events, which was founded by local man Robert Maxwell, wants to see more use of the harbour and its facilities by local groups.

It also wants to hear from organisations, groups and individuals who have ideas on how the scenic and safe waters could benefit more people.

The charity has leased the port and harbour, extending to include Coney Island beach, but excluding more than 25 acres which was vested from the owner, Mr Sean Tracey, by the former Down Council in 1982.

“A lot of local folk already make good use of the facilities here and we not only want to see this continue, but to grow,” said Robert.

“We certainly don’t have a monopoly on ideas and the door is open to anyone who has vision of just how this can provide enjoyment for those who would benefit.

Let’s Do Events already operates a successful coarse fishing lake near Clough.

Its plans for Killough include boat trips, sea fishing and perhaps a sailing regatta.

“We would love to hear from anyone who can make use of what we have here,” Robert continued.

“The opportunities are endless and the benefits to the community are immense. We are not just open to ideas, but we are also encouraging them.

“We hope to get going in mid September, subject to the easing of Covid restrictions. We are spreading our wings and we want to reach out of the local community.”

Robert also paid tribute to the efforts Nigel Cree, a trustee of the charity, who played a major role in securing the lease.

Nigel said he was delighted to have been of help and and described the harbour as a “great facility”.

“We want to be able to offer our services to charities, schools, community groups, you name it,” he remarked. “We are ready to go.”
