Hat-trick of titles makes Saul the top Scor club

22 February 2012

ST Michael’s Parochial hall, Finnis, Dromara was packed for the East Down Scor Sinsear finals on Sunday evening.

Those attending enjoyed over four-and-a half-hours of music, song, dance, novelty act and quiz as the various competitors sought a place in the County finals in the Abbey CBS Newry next Sunday at 6pm.

All sections were strongly contested and both the winners and runners up go through to those finals.

Saul emerged as the top club winning three titles while Bredagh and Kilcoo won two titles each. The quiz was the closest contest of the evening with Bredagh the holders.

The first winner of the evening was in the Solo Singing where Bredagh’s Brian McAlea just edged out Joan Noade (Loughinisland) for the title. But both go through to the county final.

In the Instrumental Music section the winners were Saul represented by Angela McGreevy, Kevin Burns, Brian Riordan and Sarah McVeigh. Runners up were St. Paul’s represented by Trevor Stewart, Ciaran Dallat and Colm and Catherine McGinn.

The Recitation/Storytelling section saw Saul collect their second title of the night through Roisin Sloan with former Scor na nOg champion Aileen McLaughlin, from Kilcoo, as runner up.

In the ever popular Ballad Group section, Saul collected their third title of the evening with a brilliant performance just edging out St. Paul’s.

In the Novelty Act, Kilcoo almost brought the house down with their act with Aileen, Teresa, Maria and James McLaughlin, Sean O’Hare and Paddy McCrickard turning in a brilliant performance.

Kilcoo were the only entrants in the Set Dancing with Francis and Donna Rogan, Jason McQuaid, Steven Brown, Theresa Rice, Lisa McClean, Sean O’Neill, Michelle Johnston and Cathy Ward impressing on the night.
