Grandad’s memory inspires Brooke

BROOKE Smyth loves her long hair and hates going to the hairdressers. However, she heard about The Little Princess Trust, which provides real-hair wigs to children who have lost their hair through cancer treatment.

And after losing her beloved granddad to cancer last year, and knowing several others who battled the disease, Brooke decided she really wanted to help.

Mum Sharon Maggs said the Loughinisland girl watched a You Tube video about the process and agreed to have 14 inches sheared from her long locks.

“She knows her hair will grow and she feels this will help people who have cancer,” she said. “I was very surprised. She is a real girlie girl. So far she has raised £600 in the process.”

Sharon said her dad Gerry Maggs and Brooke had been close and that she was still finding coming to terms with his death a little hard.

“They had such a lovely bond,” she said. “He obviously spoilt her rotten”.

Speaking before the big cut Brooke said she was excited but “a wee bit nervous”.

“It is about helping other children,” she said. “It is a nice thing to do.”
