CROSSGAR Golf Club was bathed in wonderful sunshine last Saturday for Joyce Dodd’s Lady Captain’s Day —the first ‘major’ of the year at the club.
The juvenile competition saw cousins Curtis Watson and Oliver Douglas battle it out for the first prize and it was young Douglas who held his nerve to secure top spot.
The Lady Captain’s daughter, Sophie, had a day to remember when she won the junior ladies’ prize.
The men’s event, as always, was keenly contested with conditions ensuring a good score was going to be needed to get into the main prizes.
Mel McCarthy and Andrew Perry set the early pace when they both recorded 41 points with McCarthy getting the nod on a count-back.
Martin Hyde has shown some snippets of form earlier in the season and he certainly picked the right day to play his best round of the year so far, signing for 43 points and securing the first major victory.
David Watson proved he is also the man for the big occasion adding, yet another gross prize to his CV. Ian Patterson enjoyed a return to form to win the back nine with Paul Johnston winning the front nine.
The Lady Captain’s nephew, Callum Carson, had the day of his golfing life so far winning the guest prize, nearest the pin and registering his first ever hole-in-one at the eighth hole.
Adam Withers won the battle of the big hitters with a monster drive at the 15th.
The ladies’ competition for the coveted Lady Captain’s trophy also saw superb scores posted, with Sylvia Flynn and Oriel Nesbitt both signing for 39 points, which secured them the category A and B first places.
Samantha Coulter and Siobhan Tweedie were again in the prizes, being runners-up in the categories.
Barbara Clarke and Barbara Wootton won the front and back nines respectively and Barbara Clarke also won the Past Captains’ Trophy. Maeve Fay enjoyed the consolation of winning both the nearest the pin and longest drive.
The main battle for Lady Captain’s Day Trophy, came down to a tussle between Lorna Stevenson and Rebecca Morrison.
Lorna could have been forgiven for thinking she had done enough when she returned 41 points, but Rebecca maintained her superb form of late and secured victory with a fabulous score of 43 points on a day she will never forget.
