Flagship Festival of Flight set to return

IT has been confirmed that the Festival of Flight will be returning to Newcastle in June.

Newry, Mourne and Down Council’s flagship tourist event will take place on Saturday, June 20.

This festival, which comprises exciting displays both on and off the ground is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors to the resort.

It has not yet been confirmed if the RAF Red Arrows display team will be taking part.

The Festival of Flight is part of the council’s ‘Giant Adventures’ programme of events which was announced this week.

They include Wake the Giant in Warrenpoint in August, and Footsteps in the Forest in Slieve Gullion Forest Park.

The Council’s tourism programme will also include the DownTime Festival in Downpatrick from June 18-21, the Strangford Lough Skiffie Festival from July 31-August 2, and the Strangford Lough and the Narnia Festival in Kilbroney Park, Rostrevor, from November 20-22. 

Council chairman Charlie Casey said: “These flagship festivals are key events in our programme of tourism events.

“We are very pleased that the Festival of Flight, Wake the Giant and Footsteps in the Forest are all scheduled to return to our district in 2020.

“These festivals act as a catalyst to inspire visitors to visit our area. Investing in these key events, demonstrates the huge commitment that our council makes to attract visitors to experience the beauty of our landscape and coastline.

Cllr Casey added: “The theme of our Giant Adventures demonstrates the scale of our ambition to host world-class events in our district.

“Each of these events are held at key locations within our area and I look forward to watching these events continue to evolve and extend the visitor season.”
