Family raises £8k to Cancer Centre in memory of father

8 December 2021

A DOWNPATRICK family have raised £8,740 for the Friends of the Cancer Centre charity in memory of their father.

Michael (Mickey) Tumelty, from Corbally Road, died from cancer in February at the age of 81.

His five sons — Paul, Francis, Damien, Michael and Gareth — wanted to help other families affected by cancer and organised a tractor run in August which was well supported by the local farming community.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Damien, who runs Castlescreen Farm with his partner Jackie, said: “There was a fabulous turnout from the local farming community who joined in the tractor run and enjoyed a BBQ, live auction and music after the event.

“We have been overwhelmed by the fantastic support and are delighted that the money raised will make a huge difference to other local families affected by cancer.

We would like to say a huge thanks to everyone who donated prizes, helped on the day or took part in the tractor run.”

Their next fundraising activity is a prize draw in memory of Patrick Smyth (Ballydrumman Herd). The first prize will be a pedigree in-calf Dexter cow which has been generously donated by Bridie Smyth and the second prize will be a £100 Dexter beef hamper.

Tickets priced at £1 each are available now from Castlescreen Farm and the prize draw will take place at 4.30pm on Friday December 17.

Friends of the Cancer Centre relies entirely on the generosity of the local community and all money donated stays in Northern Ireland, directly benefiting patients and their families.
