Exciting redevelopment of play park edges closer

IMAGES have been released of what the significantly revamped Downs Road play park in Newcastle will look like when a major overhaul is completed by the spring.

Newry, Mourne and Down Council is spearheading the overhaul of the hugely popular facility which is due to open in April.

Designs for the new refurbished park, which have been made public this week, feature more inclusive play equipment to suit children of all abilities.

When the upgrade is completed, park users will see a number of new additions, including the Newcastle Nautilus Play Galleon, swings — including one for those in wheelchairs — slides, a roundabout, sensory area, a trampoline and a zip wire.

In addition, there will also be a new picnic area added which residents and visitors can enjoy when visiting the park and Newcastle Promenade.

The refurbishment programme is part of the authority’s play strategy which was established as a mechanism for meeting the play needs of children and young people throughout our district.

Council chairwoman Cathy Mason says the Covid pandemic has made everyone more aware of the importance of outdoor activities and

the benefits that they bring to children’s physical fitness and mental health.

“The council’s play strategy plays a pivotal role in ensuring that children in our district have as many play opportunities as possible,” she added.

“Play is a natural, fundamental part of children and young people’s lives that supports growth and development, enhances health and well-being, encourages social and intellectual development, and enables children and young people to develop essential life skills.”

Cllr Mason said she was delighted to see the refurbishment plans for the play park coming to fruition, “in order that residents and visitors can enjoy the new inclusive facility once it reopens in the spring”.
