Elaine dares to dream

4 July 2018

ELAINE Beattie finally realised her long-time dream on Friday when she was named as the 2018 Lady Captain’s Day champion at Spa.

Her 41 points was a marvellous winning score on a scorching hot day, but several others, including Gillian Earls and Doreen Speers, chased the coveted title right to the end.

Speaking at the clubhouse presentation, Elaine said despite playing golf for many years the lady captain’s top prize had always eluded her until now and she was particularly pleased to take the title on her friend Carol Shields’s “big day”.

Carol thanked all the Spa ladies, visitors, men and juveniles who teed off for her competition and particularly all the new lady members who had joined the club this year and were taking part in a Lady Captain’s event for the first time.

She also thanked the many Spa officials and members who contributed to the success of the day, including professional Gary Wardlow, lady secretary Sally Shields, Marian Armstrong, Gillian Earls, Patricia Hayes, Harry Walsh and Roy Patterson,  as well as the bar, restaurant and greens staff.

The lady captain expressed deep appreciation to her husband Philip and family members for their continued patience, support and encouragement and thanked club captain John Robinson for all his help and guidance.

Mr Robinson said it had been a wonderful day for Spa and he praised what he called the “enormous contribution” the ladies’ branch made to the success and well being of the Club.

“This Club is blessed with the spirit of the lady members. The amount of work they put in is absolutely marvellous and I thank them all for that,” he said.

The men’s nine-hole competition was won by vice-president Tom Coburn with a fantastic score of 23 points but he also was chased all the way by the president, John Munn, and Chris Donaldson. They both carded 22 points with a count-back awarding second place to John.
