RYAN Doyle, better known for his silky footballing skills, scored what is perhaps his greatest sporting achievement off the field by winning Jim Logue’s President’s Day at St Patrick’s Golf Club on Saturday.
One of the early starters, Doyle posted a score he must surely have felt would be beaten particularly with the ever-improving weather conditions.
Out in a modest 17 points and with a bogey on 10, there was no indication that he would even play to his handicap, let alone beat it.
However, three under for the last eight holes saw him amass 23 points on the back nine and 40 overall. All he could do now was wait.
Many tried, but all failed to better Doyle’s 40 points. The course, playing at its longest, made scoring difficult. Gerry Daly came closest, but fell one short on 39.
Also in with good scores were the consistent Paul Kelly and Ernie Kenmore who finished third and fourth respectively with 38.
It was a footballing double header with Barry Fitzsimons winning the gross with his score of 72. Daniel Teggart won the seniors’ prize with 36 points and Eamon Fitzsimmons the guests’ prize with 36 points.
The past captains’ prize went to Adrian Carson.
