Downpatrick to celebrate with twinning towns

6 November 2013

THE Downpatrick Twinning Partnership has a busy programme of twinning exchanges over the coming year.

In the next 12 months Downpatrick will co-ordinate a series of five themed twinning exchange meetings with its town twinning partners.

Downpatrick’s twinning partners are Ceuti, in Spain, Listowel, in Ireland, Jelgava, in Latvia, Michalowice, in Poland, Szekszard, in Hungary, Iezer, in Romania; Valenca, in Portugal, and Bezons, in France.

The aim of the meetings is to examine how people engage more fully in the European Union (EU) by promoting greater EU citizenship for youth, older people, disabled people, socially disadvantaged and Roma people.

John Noble, the president of the Downpatrick Twinning Partnership, said it is important that everyone has an opportunity to engage with town twinning.

“These meetings with our partners across Europe will allow us to share ideas and best practice on how to engage more people,” he said.

“Town twinning affords people chances to engage with the European Union; meet new friends and develop close personal contacts with other people across Europe,” he added.
