Downpatrick fighters secure gold medals at Antrim Championships

20 March 2013

MEMBERS of the Downpatrick-based Pegasus Boxing Club were at Loughside Leisure Centre in Belfast for the Antrim Youth Championships recently.

Pierce Crane was taking part in the 54 kilo division and was paired against Gleann boxer Sean Morris. Young Crane, a notoriously slow starter, fell behind by four points to one after the first round and had it all to do in the next two rounds.

A more aggressive approach won him the second round, but still trailed by one point going into the final round. A determined Crane went all guns blazing and rocked the Belfast boxer with some hard right crosses to book his way into the final on a 12-9 scoreline.

In his final he boxed Glengormley boxer C. McTasney and another slow start left him in arrears after the first round. Some good advice from his coach got Pierce back on track and he went on to take the title.

It was a good performance from the Pegasus boxer after losing in the Ulster final in his previous bout.

Next for Pegasus was Dylan Duffy who was paired with Larne boxer Adam Workman in the youth 2 57 kilo division.

Dylan had to be at his very best for this contest as Workman is a very solid performer. In the second round he caused damage to Dylan’s nose which forced the referee to intervene but allowed Dylan to continue.

This made Duffy step up a gear and he completely outboxed his opponent for the remainder of the bout to win 16-7 on points.

In his semi-final Dylan boxed R. Wallace, from Scorpion ABC and again he showed a good boxing brain to win 13-2.

In his final contest he boxed Immaculata fighter H. Devlin and it was another comfortable win for young Duffy over a strong opponent to win 23-6.

Both Pegasus boxers now qualify for the All Ireland championships in Dublin this weekend and must be in contention after some great displays in these championships.
